People Judging Books
Over the past few weeks my friends have been judging the books I've been reading. This is starting to tick me off beyond believe and now it take all I have not to snap at them. The cover to the side, The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead, is one that they were making fun of. Firstly, they know nothing about the book itself and are only judging by the cover and the small blurb and calling it "stupid" and "dumb."
Even after reading the blurb, which they were confused about because this is the sixth book, they wondered why I was reading "something like that?" When I turned away with an annoyed look they said that they hadn't said anything rude.

Although they may think they haven't said anything wrong, and they are allowed their opinions, it is completely annoying when they judge the book because it's YA or Fantasy because "those aren't real books."
The fact that people make you feel ashamed of reading YA books makes me really pissed off. If I was to say, "Why are you reading that book, it seems stupid" they would be pissed off as well, so why think it's okay to judge other people's books.
I don't read much other then YA because that is what I like and am able to get into. If I was able to get into historical fiction, books that are written like poems, or even books classified as "Adult" don't you think I would?

The fact that people are know judging others who read mainly YA books sickens me. I hadn't realized how much it affect me until they started saying something about it. Now, granted, to people who haven't read the whole Vampire Academy or Bloodlines series this book probably did seem like some stupid love story when you read the blurb and looked at the cover, but that doesn't give you the right to judge it based on that. After she called the book's concept stupid, I told her that the whole series was good and it wasn't just "another vampire book" because, seriously, it's not. Whenever people see the word "vampire" now they think of Twilight and think that every story is the same. For people that have read VA or Bloodlines you guys know that it isn't a Twlight love story. Bloodlines and Vampire Academy are both stories about strong women facing the challenges within their world, and, yes, there is a love story in it. Yes, there are vampires in it. But, NO, that does not make this series Twilight AT ALL. | Now, if you read the book with an open mind and still say the story is stupid then I will respect what you are saying to me, but if you haven't even read the book and you tell me I shouldn't be reading it because it's something you don't like...you better watch for me fist. The Ruby Cricle and A Darker Shade of Magic are two of the best books that I have read this year and they were both books that they called stupid because they were either YA, contained vampires, or had magic in them. Is that why people judge YA books? Because they have magic or features that can't be in this world? If that is why people hate them then back off. Do you know why people read? To escape the world you are living in and to pretend, just for a moment, that things like this do exist. Then, there are others who read YA books because they like the magical elements. Or they even be like me, and aren't able to get into other types of books. |
That was my little rant about people judging me books. After they made fun of The Ruby Circle I started to wonder if I should just take off the covers of the books. I couldn't tell if they were making fun of it because it was YA, for the cover, or just from the small paragraph they read on the blurb.
Either way, I've started to ignore what they say when I'm reading now because I know that it is my choice to read what I want and while I learn lessons from these book characters they can play their video games.
